New indiegame Kickstarter: Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends!
over 3 years ago – Wed, Mar 03, 2021 at 07:03:30 AM

Dear backers,

I hope you've all been well and enjoying many chivalric adventures!

I wanted to reach out to tell you all about a new Kickstarter campaign that we're embarking on called Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends. It's a hand-animated video game project with big explorable worlds, 4 playable characters, and lots of nods to pieces of architectural and animation history. It's based on the groundbreaking 1905 (public domain) comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland.

Please support and share this new project over at its Kickstarter page! It's been called "the best use of public domain I've seen in a video game" by GameHistory.org's Frank Cifaldi and earned the "Projects We Love" designation within ours of launching! We hope you'll love it too!

Cheers,

Chris

New online store and Small Business Saturday weekend sale
almost 5 years ago – Fri, Nov 29, 2019 at 08:20:13 AM

Dear backers,

Happy Holidays! Thank you again for supporting La Mancha!

I wanted to chime in with some news about the game. We've been getting lots of questions about where to find the game now that the Kickstarter is well-over. To make things easier, we've opened an online store at https://www.pfbstudios.com/shop/! Go check it out if you're looking to get the game for a friend or if you know someone who would like to order it!

With the new online store comes the ability to also have SALES, so we're having a Small Business Saturday sale until December 2nd where you can pick up the game for $25! Again, please share this widely with your friends or anyone you think might like the game!

In other news, I'll be recording an episode of the Board Game Design Lab podcast this weekend talking about La Mancha and will send an update when the episode is available. The game will also be featured on the Overdue literature podcast twice in December and reviewed by Board Game Spotlight

Cheers and thanks again for your support!

The rest of the games have been shipped!
about 5 years ago – Thu, Oct 10, 2019 at 10:36:53 PM

Dear backers,

I'm happy to announce that the rest of your orders (for backers for whom I have postage info - more on that below) have shipped!

Another box picture!

Everyone should be getting tracking information soon. Thank you again for your patience throughout the process and I hope you enjoy your copies of La Mancha

So what's next?

La Mancha is going to be one of the game's included in the American Library Association's International Games Week festivities (http://games.ala.org/international-games-week/) If your local library is participating in the event, you can request that they order one of the donated copies. We will also be doing events in the Midwest in the coming months, so keep an eye out for us!

Pie for Breakfast's next project is going to be a video game with hand-drawn artwork and based on another public domain IP. We're working on this with the indie studio PxlPlz (which made a great game called Robo Puzzle Smash that you should check out) and are currently planning a Kickstarter campaign once the game is far along enough to show. I can't spill the beans on what it is yet but I think it'll really make people Flip.

I took this to game night and people really liked it, where can they get the game?

We've already seen that a lot of people have been showing the game to their friends and family (thanks!) One way that you can continue to support La Mancha by spreading the word! We are taking online orders at our Backerkit order page, which is also linked from this Kickstarter campaign. We also have a new and improved official La Mancha page on the Pie for Breakfast website, that links to the Backerkit page.

La Mancha is also slowly making its way into friendly local game stores! If you want to see the game in your local game store, please tell them about the game and send them to our contact page, where they can inquire about special wholesale pricing.

Help! My game didn't come! Did I fill out my survey?

I am still seeing 18 backers who have not filled out their surveys, meaning that I don't know where to send your games! If that's you, then please either check your inbox (maybe your spam folder?) for the Backerkit reminder that I sent out this morning. If you can't find that, then go to this link: https://lamancha.backerkit.com/ to recover your survey and fill it out. I'll send out the remaining games as they trickle in.

If you backed this project using an e-mail address that you don't use anymore, then you won't be able to get to your survey! Please send me a Kickstarter message so I can help you get access your survey if that happens to you!

And finally

I wanted to share a final thank you to all of you for believing in this project. It has truly meant a lot to not only launch a game that I truly love about one of my favorite pieces of literature, but to also do it with the support of so many wonderful people. It's been an honor and privilege to take this journey with you dear backers. I hope that we shall join one another for more quixotic adventures!

Cheers and many thanks,

Chris

First wave of games shipping! Also FAQ on one of the Love cards...
about 5 years ago – Fri, Sep 27, 2019 at 08:14:04 PM

Dear backers,

Sorry for the radio silence! It's been a crazy few weeks on this end but 1) La Mancha did finally arrive after a long ocean trip and 2) we've been packing up shipping boxes to get La Mancha to you. I'm happy to say that the first big wave of boxes (a bit over half of the total backers) will be going out TODAY (edit - while I was mid-way through writing this the mail truck came so the games are officially shipped)! This first batch will cover mainly domestic backers. We'll continue packing and shipping in waves over the next few weeks so stay tuned.

I do appreciate everyone's patience throughout this process. The potential for new tariffs caused a longer process for developing the shipping plan than usual. We had also originally had planned to use fulfillment services to manage shipping, but our original vendors informed us they could not take additional clients after all and our backups ended up being out of our price range. We're in the final stretch though!

"Fernando" love card FAQ

We have been getting a question about the Fernando card from players so I wanted to give you all the heads up as you get your games. His card (see picture below) tells you to roll a die on the beginning of a Feat Round to see whether you can use his effect or whether you have to sit out the Feat Round while everyone else plays it. This ability is meant to be optional: you DO NOT have to roll unless you choose to engage the effect (I probably should have worded it: "you MAY roll a die"). He has a strength value so that players can choose whether to use this power or just use his strength bonus.

Players have asked what the point of the effect is if the risk is that great. It's definitely meant to be a high risk/high reward card used if a player desperately needs a boost to fight an enemy or when the user is ahead and wants the possibility of becoming a wrecking ball.

As a design note: this fits Fernando's role in the novel where he is easily overcome when confronted. While some games would take a card like this and require the die roll every turn, I thought that having it as an optional effect would allow this game to have a lighter tone with fewer outright punishments. This was done to let the game have the same tone as the novel (alternatively, a game like Moby Dick the Card Game or Dark Souls the Card Game has much more severe gameplay and punishments to fit their source material.)

That's all for now. I'll keep you updated as games are sent out. Almost there!

Cheers and many thanks,

Chris

Reminder: locking addresses tomorrow!
about 5 years ago – Sat, Aug 31, 2019 at 12:25:23 PM

Dear backers,

This is just a reminder that I will be locking addresses on Backerkit tomorrow! What this means is that you can still edit your shipping address until tomorrow at noon EST on the same website where you took your backer survey.

The games themselves are very nearly to us. If all still goes according to plan, we should have the games late this coming week or early the next week, and then the flurry of shipping begins!

Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions!

Chris
