Latest Updates from Our Project:

Chapter III: In which I make some small changes to Encounter cards
about 6 years ago – Wed, Nov 07, 2018 at 09:13:57 PM

Dear backers,

Just a quick update. After the latest playtest I noticed that while Encounter cards (the normal story prompts where players play 1 card to tell a story) are fun, Love cards are EVEN MORE fun!

I thought that one way to close the gap between these two modes could be to better define to players what they should be talking about during the Encounter phase and to give the judge player a more defined role in the story as they do in the Love phase. Here's an example with the Glittering Helmet card.

Chapter II: Wherein is related our gratitude upon reaching 50% funded and appearing on podcasts!
about 6 years ago – Tue, Nov 06, 2018 at 01:40:34 PM

Dear backers,

We smashed through a major threshold yesterday...50% funded!

Thank you again to everyone who has believed in this project. We're going to make sure we make the game as amazing as possible.

La Mancha also appeared in a few podcasts yesterday, go check them out!

I was interviewed on Max Pears's Level Design Lobby and spoke about architecture, game worlds, my book on level design, and the design of La Mancha.

La Mancha was also featured on the Lollygaggers Podcast and they had some really wonderful things to say! The La Mancha stuff starts at 29:53.

Lastly, a Backer Only update went out yesterday. Please check that out - it has an opportunity for backers to "play" a hand of La Mancha for a chance to win an extra art postcard with their pledge!

That's it for now! Thank you again. Please continue to share the game so we can continue our sally towards 100%!

Chapter I: Which describes our excitement after our first 48 hours and how the game was created
about 6 years ago – Sat, Nov 03, 2018 at 12:22:25 PM

Dear Backers,

This is Chris, the game's designer! I wanted to post a quick update to express my (and that of the kind folks working with me) extreme gratitude for your early support on our quixotic journey! We passed over 1/3 of our backing goal in under 36 hours so we're well on our way to funding our very first major print run of the game! Please tell your friends about the game and the campaign so we can sally forth towards our funding goal!

I also wanted to introduce myself a bit more and tell you about this whole thing got started.

Again, I'm Chris! I've been a game designer for 12+ years. I teach game design at a university games and animation program and make games as Pie for Breakfast Studios. I also do projects that blend games and the arts such as museum exhibitions and games like La Mancha!

La Mancha started when I was reading Don Quixote and thought "I'd like to make a game about this but don't know what kind..." Trying to capture the novel in a video game would involve a team much bigger than what I have access to. Then, a friend in my tabletop group sent out a challenge: instead of playing store-bought games in the next session, let's each make a prototype game to test out. I tried my Don Quixote idea there and La Mancha was born!

The game has evolved quite a bit in the last 2 years. Originally, it was a game where the players would respond to mundane story suggestions (like waiting for the bus) with quotes from Don Quixote. The story prompts from the books were not part of the first prototypes and they were fun, but didn't properly capture the feeling of the novel. They were also confusing for people who had never read the book before. As I added more of the novel's situations to the game, testers got excited not only for the game, but also to read more of the book. That's when I thought "hey...this thing is really coming together..."

The cards from the first prototype weren't as clear as the current game. Also, here's one of the Encounter Cards, the Glittering Helmet!

That's it for now! We (there are a few of us here working on the campaign) will update you with more about how the game evolved and is evolving. We'll also keep you updated on any major milestones with the project and post any cool Don Quixote-related things we find on the internet!

Again, please tell your friends about the game and the campaign! Here a few handy links. Follow our social media and help get the word out!
